Biomining is whole lot of a different thing. But if you are talking about biological data mining (which i assume you are), then sure, it is and now a days widely used to identify and characterize novel traits associated with cancer

Yes,

It is done in clinical research, where you identify the causes (risks factors) in a phenotype.

It can also be done in biology, in this field please take a look at GWAS.

Interestingly the data from GWAS comes from clinical studies who used lots of bio-analyzers.

At this stage it is still difficult to idenfity all the causes for all type of cancers. Usually researchers focus on types of one cancer (HER2 positive-negative in Breast cancer for exemple).

Talking about causes : whether its specific DNA mutation, metastasis spreading or nutrition... one thing lead to another so there is different stages in "causing".
