The Navsari Agriculture University (NAU) in Gujarat has standardized a process of manufacturing high-value paper from banana fiber, which it claims has the property of making currency notes lasting for about a century.
“We have standardized the process of making high-value paper from the banana fiber. The paper has been tested at the Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology,” Dr B.N. Kolambe, a scientist at Navsari Agriculture University (NAU), told PTI.
“During the research, it was found that paper made out of this fiber has a shelf-life of over 100 years as it is the strongest of the long fibers ever found amid natural fibers. It can be folded for as many as 3,000 times,” he said.
“This fibre has the potential to find application in making of the paper required for the printing of currency notes,” Mr Kolambe said.
According to references in few leading journals, Japan uses banana fiber to manufacture the paper required to print its currency Yen, he said.
A RBI official said: “Banana fiber as an input raw material could be the secret behind the lasting currency of Japan, whereas the Indian currency is quite prone to getting soiled during transactions and has lower shelf-life.”
In the present set-up, Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Ltd imports very high grade quality cotton rags and pulp to manufacture the paper required for currency, the official said on condition of anonymity.

You are seeing good application of the natural resources , what is expected in currency is anti soil properties , good low stress mechanical properties,which can withstand bending shearing and Congressional properties to which it is subjected to during its handling and storing in wallet . Most important properties and bending shear and Congressional recovery it has to undergo continuously in Handling. More we must engineer the currency is such a way that bending ,shear and compressible stresses in actual usage are less then yield point on stress strain curve. Perfect recovery happens at the end of each process for which currency is subjected.
Banana fiber is a multiple celled structure. The lumen is large in relation to the wall thickness. Cross markings are rare and fiber tips pointed and flat, ribbon like individual fiber diameter range from 14 to 50 microns and the length from 0.25 cm to 1.3 cm, showing the large oval to round lumen.
Banana fiber is a natural fiber with high strength, which can be blended easily with cotton fiber or other synthetic fibers to produce blended fabric & textiles. It is mainly used by cottage industry in Southern India at present. Banana Fiber also finds use in high quality security/ currency paper, packing cloth for agriculture produce, ships towing ropes, wet drilling cables etc.

Do you have any data as to mechanical properties of the Currency notes produced with banana fibres. At least we can do the comparative assessment of the Low strees mechanical properties essentially required to optimum performance in terms of the increased durability and keep the currency for more time in circulation.
