I see intuition as a process, where a person chooses one out of a set of different solution patterns to solve a problem without further analysis. I'm aware that there are other views on intuition.

In order to get project funding researchers have to show that quantitative methods for findings on the role of intuition in problem solving are feasible.

Once we find a way to measure intuition... we might be able to do the same with love:)?

Michael, thank you for the so interesting material... it made me seriously think about love again:) But I wonder if this should be made subject to work by scientists - trying to measure the immeasurable things in life? Should qualitative things be tested quantitatively? Does everything to be quantified? And what would be the benefits of doing so in this particular case? Who would benefit from this "passionate love scale"? Perhaps wives to determine whether still their "halves" love them:)

Well, let's return to intuition... My thinking is based exclusively on intuition and all my achievements in the field of electronic circuits are due to it. So if someone decides to make quantitative studies of intuition, I am ready to provide my brain for the purposes of this study:)

The challenge is fascinating. I am afraid regarding the psychological and brain working complexity of the phenomenon, we may have only a try and the objectivity can be a mere condition. I think assessing of intuition is similar to the joke on the philosophy: pursuing a black cat in a totally dark room where some pursuers shout “we have got it”.

The trouble is that not only the personnel abilities, education, cultural backgrounds, vegetative conditions are variable but the impact of environment influences all this changeable factors. I believe humanity has so much urgent troubles that intuition will remain in most cases an object of discussion.

@Andras, I pretty much appreciate your negative view on measuring intuition, although you leave the door open for 'some cases', where discussions can be based on sound foundation, AFAIU. Hopefully, the other cases are not the ones where we chase Schrödinger's cat!

Of course, there is the restriction, and some limitation based on definitions and scope of the study. However, one has to be open and flexible with 'intuitive mind' to understand and measure 'intuition'. It also depends upon specific context, and how we define it universally, with ever-expanding scientific branches (physics, chemistry, zoology etc) continually.

Philosophical prophets might disagree on 'intuition' or 'guess,' but they cannot easily disregard its significance because an intuitive wing is unlimited, flies everywhere.

It is all in the approach, To physically try to perceive that it can not be measured because you can not physically see it therefore it does not exist or you can measure it on its own terms, via frequency and vibrational means. Ex: Telepathy. Is it a coincidence that you know what someone is going to say before they say it? How could you know? Was it a vibration that you picked up and translated the thought in your own mind because you yourself are functioning at that same vibration or frequency at that moment? This is what I have come to know.

I regret that I can not read and see the minds of others. Sometimes( not always) I have some kind of intuition. My children used to say that their mother is a witch. Not at all. I might have been influenced by Freud and Bethoven. Since I lived in Schwarzspanier strasse where Bethoven died ( It is not very far from the Berggasse where Freud was born) Of course, it is a coincidence. In addition to this, the Studetenheim is called Albert Schweitzer Hause. Anne-Marie Sartre( Jean-Paul Sartres mother) was born Schweizer. I must be influenced so much of his thinking.I have read so many books of Jean-Paul Sartre( in german tlanslation). I do not know if I can say that this is only a coincidence?????

Certainly intuition can be measured through numerous assessments, however, the question remains if intuition can be taught to those who are lacking. I agree with Santosh that the degree of intuition can be influenced with other psychological, physical, social, and cultural constructs, but only to those who already possess some degree of intuition.

As for the question about the importance of intuition in the progress of science (which I assume you consider to be the "natural mathematical reasoning mind"), my opinion is that intuition should carry us beyond the natural reasoning mind, but unfortunately many intuitives never move beyond what can be measured.

Perhaps brain scientists could discover something and this discovery may lead to objective measurement to some extent.

I don't think intuition can be taught, at least not to the ones completely deprived of it. There are certainly many levels of intuition. For instance, I have noticed that artists' and physicians' children are very intuitive.

It is very probable that there are secret experiments and measurements, e.g. remote viewing (which has to do with sensitivity and intuition) was for a long time (and is probably still so) part of the US military and intelligence services activities. I wouldn't be surprised if there are studies about what types/categories of people are good for that job based on gender, race, profession, skills, psychological characteristics, voice, medical history.

Another question which I find related to this one is why mathematics is taught in the humanities and social sciences incl. psychology. I think there are a lot of interesting unexplored relationships and scientists have understood the importance of holistic thinking, or in other words trying to measure and quantify phenomena which were previously thought of as non-measurable.

I am not so sure that intuition can be measured in a comparable way as for instance intelligence can be measured in an intelligence test.

It all depeds on somebody's theory of intuition as I explained in my publication "Intuition and Problem Solving" , in Curriculum and Teaching, Vol.28, No 2, 2013, pp.27-44.

For such developed individual ,the objective surface of his inspiration in such cases will not be restricted to either time limit or restricted areas .

For the developed soul intuition may even become a light force .

The intuition performance varies through time very much, so you can actually measure actual state, but there is no guarantee that it will be the same in five minutes. So you might just catch snapshot measurements. Our mind is not quiet in the current state of civilization and evolution so intuition perforance changes the similar way as our moods or thoughts.

You can also read a book to deeply investigate the mind issue of these days by reading the book Der Direkte Pfad by Minarik. It was published before 1989 in Austria under different author's name. This will give you more ability to understand, how a scientific experiment should be constructed once uderstanding the related problems.

A key question is are you looking at the intuitive judgment or the accuracy of the judgment. As some of the responses have already said, it depends on the context. Measuring accuracy depends on context and research objectives. See Hall and Colvin 2011 (see citation below). Also, I have recently published an article where we objectively measure intuition and accuracy of the intuition (see attached paper).

My focus has been using intuition and intuitive "inner resources" to support recovery from trauma and enhance intuition. I used Spiritual Intuition Inventory (SII) (Slocum, and James, 2005) The inventory provides a multi-faith perspective on spirituality I have used this this inventory as a pre-test / post-test (after 6 months) with Aboriginal and nonaboriginal populations in Canada (before and after providing a 4-day psycho-social group training programs in trauma recovery, with a follow-up post-test 6 months later).

I used it to measure changes in group participants ability to use intuitive resources for self healing.

I think you are asking a different question,--none-the-less: When I delivered the SII, after 4 days, and again after 6 months, participants scores on the post test showed higher mean scores on the SII after six months. This indicated trends toward increased intuition, with tendencies toward increased personal insights and personally meaningful spiritual practices (which this measure also evaluates) along with a tendency to sustain positive change and enhanced well being. These results, appeared to confirm verbal reports and journal entries of participants.

There is a technical problem. Perhaps two. First, although less important, is suspect you are asking about measuring "positive consequences of intuition". But of course, intuition also has negative consequences, and we often acknowledge them with phrases like "I knew that would happen!" When we fail. We might call that something's like "time reversed intuition".

Intuition, in it's natural element, consists of the things contributing to a decision that CANNOT be measured. We might apply some strange logic like measuring different people's tendency to make decisions on a lot of data vs people who make decisions based on very little data, but this does not distinguish between idiots, lucky gamblers, or even intelligent decision making based on small amounts of data.
