Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) ceramics are extensively regarded as excellent bone grafts due to their good biocompatibility, osteoconductivity is it possible to endow biomaterials with osteoinductive ability by optimizing the material characteristics rather than by adding living cells or growth factors to induce tissue regeneration.
Kanchan Maji Yes and No. First, the "intrinsic osteoinduction" where a material induces bone formation in ectopic sites (e.g. under skin or muscle) is a slow process and its mechanism is still unclear. Secondly, intrinsic osteoinduction is not necessarily depended on chemical properties of materials as there are several reports that polymer sponges or metals have formed bone in ectopic sites. However, there is a consensus that this often relate to the release of calcium and phosphate ions, or presence of submicron to micron pores on the surface, or structural porosity and formation of bioactive apatite layer that is proven to be an essential requirement for a material to be intrinsically osteoinductive. Can “intrinsic osteoinduction” be boosted, answer is Yes, can it reach to the effectiveness of “osteoinduction” by potent growth factors?. Maybe.
