We are working on a Passive Modified Atmosphere Packing solution for fruits and vegetables. So for that, we are looking for the preferred laser type, Slightly confused with the range of lasers. In some papers, they are using ND:YAG and a CO2 laser. But the question is why not diode laser for this application. Kindly add your points in it.

Usually to produce micro perforations of controlled diameters in any material is a critical task. If one uses lasers, they already have high degree of collimation which provides a directed high power source of light energy. Thus using directed and controlled energy one can process all sorts of materials. But that is not the only case. For material processing with light energy is not a straight forward way. There are pulsed lasers and continuous wave (CW) lasers. I will not go in detail for them but both can produce drastically different results on a same material. In your case, a plastic film expose to CW laser to make a hole, might just evaporate the region to make a bigger hole than what is required. Using a pulsed lasers, it can be done with ease and accurate. For the actual question of your's, if you can control the output energy of the diode laser in such a way that the micro perforation on the BOPP films can be formed, than no issues. In principle it should be possible as long as one can control the pulse width, repitation rate and the energy in it. All of these things are in practice possible to do in diode lasers!!!
