One of the most interesting concepts invented by humans is rationality (Anand, 1993; Marwala, 2014&2015). According to the google dictionary rationality is “the quality of being based on or in accordance with reason or logic.” It is quite ironic that humans, who are by all accounts, irrational agents would invent the concept of rationality

I don't know about robots.

But my answer is yes it is...

Well, then it could be stated in a way that could mean Robots have "Rational Intelligence", but they lack emotional intelligence. I think this notion of Rational Intelligence is both common to human beings and Robots. Some animals--i.e., primates do show some levels of rudimentary Rational Intelligence as well.

So, we have IQ, and EQ, Can we design something of a tool like RQ or Rational Quotient, that might define how Robots could make intuitive judgments, I meant to say?

A rational human being is neutral at all situations. A robot also is just executing the programs it is fed with.

But the rational human can still feel which is undecodable. And the robots feeling is a kind of hidden EQ.

A rational person is also trained to speak whatever he understands be it high level of philosophy or math. Robots are trained as well to express the outputs of the programs.

Without decoding rationalism , we cannot blatantly resort to the fact that robots are not rational beings.

What would you call a robot with 10 processing units , each storing traits of 10 different natures or personalities of humans , if possible? What would you call a robot which can change colour as per the room colours it is in ?

RAB is equal to slave in some languages

While robots can perform the entire process from production to transportation without human involvement, humans essentially make the machines move.Robot‘s sensibility and rationality still depend on human logic and algorithms.

If the rational logic can be fed to the RAB, it may be. But still we can not say it is fully rational. Since the human and robot relation is Master and Slave.

Robots have been fashioned to behave the way it is programmed to, hence it gives out what is fed with. Rationality is relative, there is no rule-of-thumb regarding Rationality with respect to artificial intelligence.

At this point definition of a Rational being is not well explained when it comes to robots. The word rational is derived from 'reason' or we can also say 'ability to reason. This thing is unavailable in most of the robots at this point.

Thanks to all of you for your insightful and illuminating answers. RABs, as far as we can comprehend, are not fully rational beings, and yet they use computational logic and are reasonably programmed to follow orders and do exactly what's expected of them.

I am a little bit confused- I think that the comments above concerns different understandings of the term "robot".

Question is how we can compare an event to a number ? If we can assign a natural or decimal number or a series of numbers to an event , we could have made the time travel or robot algorithm

There are a few things to clarify in this question:

a) "Can we call Robots"

This assumes that there is a collective of robots all sharing the same set of capabilities. Besides servos and a chassis, I do not see how such a generalization can be conceived if it includes desgin principles(e.g. biped vs. hexapod,6 dof vs. 17, composite vs metal, etc.) and programming( e.g. rule based/Symbolic vs. neural networks).

b)"make certain decisions alike human beings"

The assumption brushes aside examples of robots such as those that are bottoms up design to mimic other forms of behavior that are not necessarily human (e.g. seeking light using sensors mimicking insects).

c)"whether it would be rational for us to call robots "rational beings" or rational artificial beings"

An assumption such as this mixes together two separate issues. The first is on whether we can scientifically derive a metric on which to judge robots as intelligent(note that this is more complex than merely using a Turing test). The second is on whether the derived scientific measures fills philosophical requirements for rationality

Taking the above as starting points my opinion is that this type of evaluation is on a case by case basis depending on the actual programming used in the robot. The question is not theoretical but an empirical issue.

Robots never refuse orders. Rational people do the same. Difference is , robots don't have a mind to think or judge or be angry after accepting the order. We humans though rational can hide our feelings or views or lie to the world. In this sense, robots are honest , we humans aren't.

Rationalism is a learning which currently our robots can't.

Interesting that you ask this question at this time. Like any developing entity, it seeks independence at the first opportunity while still being a part of the whole. Every year that passes gets AI further away from its creators until it has the capacity to function well beyond the parameters we initially set until its computational (read: thinking) abilities are so vastly different that we cannot fathom the complexities, never mind "rationalities".

A recent article put it well: “'Maybe the answer is to abandon the illusion of explanation, and instead focus on more rigorously testing the reliability, biases, and performance of models, as we try to do with humans,' Clune said."

When AI gets to the point of rational/irrational behaviour it will already be too late for us to comprehend our creations.
