I recently in 2018 worked on a topic and I hope to send it for publication early next year. However, I found out through a conference that another scientist have worked recently in 2020 on similar topic in the same study area.
I want to know if it is ethical for each of us to publish the outcome of his results.
Adeniyi - if the two studies are independent of each other - and the similarity is just coincidence - then that would be fine. If anyone questioned it - both parties could defend that stance. If, however, the similarity is due to collusion - then that would not be a good idea at all and could be questioned as unethical. Another option is for both research parties to collaborate and produce a single, shared article based on joint outcomes.

Adeniyi JohnPaul Adewumi , yes this can happen, several researchers can coincidentally think of the same idea, but its not necessary that they all get the same results, the results and design of the study can differ in the end. Good luck.
Dissecting the word 'Research', we have Re+search, which means searching again. The topic can be same but the outcome can be different with different objectives, methodology and assumptions of the research. Research is ethical so long as it is within the prescribed limits of the plagiarism test. That is why, perhaps, concept of product patenting and process patenting came into vogue.
Yes, they can, if in my opinion, there is a diversity, even smaller, in data, in approach and the conditions of the study. Besides, in the question, the mentioned studies are similar not equal.

In your case I would contact directly the other scientist and you should compare your results, if they are exactly the same then you may have a problem. However if they complement each other I would suggest to submit together the two papers to the same journal and explain to the editor why you would like to have these two papers published side by side (if accepted of course). In the past I have already seen such publications and it would not the first time that such thing happens.
