As tubular furnaces are known for their uniform heating all around the sample and collection/exhaust of pyrolysis/synthesis gases is also easy. Can it be used for all the purposes (e.g. calcination, coating, determination of ash and volatiles etc.) where muffle furnace is used?
Of course, for laboratory purposes and small samples, tube furnace is more advantageous than muffle furnace because the tube furnace offers much more possibility. However, for larger parts and masses, a simple and cheap muffle furnace is essential, because such large tube furnace are extremely expensive.
In a good laboratory there must be a chamber furnace as well as a tube furnace.
Tube furnaces can be used in place of a muffle furnace. However, I always found that a metal tubular inset provides for more uniform heating when that is necessary.
