Leader sequences can be targeted as antivirals. In the case of influenza A virus, leader sequences contain signals for RNA replication, transcription and packaging. Though, SARS-COV-2 is different from influenza--it is imperative form classical approaches in case of HIV antivirals to target leader sequences could be an attractive strategy -- also because of the reason that, leader sequences may be conserved sequences and may be relatively easy to target in comparison to other regions that mutate constantly.
