The world experiences a union for a cause that afflicts everyone. What difference does this cause have to the cause of climate change and why are they not all engaged as for COVID? Can environmental education change this reality?
Climate change gets worse with travelling, as people burn fossil fuels to go around. The virus is also transmitted by travellers. If people did not travel, the virus will stay at home and be contained easily.
We have overdone it with (sometimes useless) traveling that results in climate change and also brings the disease.
Better stay home and be happy. You can see the world on youtube!
Difference is simple - coronavirus is a real danger, and climate change is regarded by different experts differently: from a real problem to a scam based on false forecasts.
We can have assumptions and ideas. B'cos the spread of the deadly Covid19 is observed from sub-humid to tropical regions. A lot need to be studied and understood to correlate Climate change with SARS Cov to nCovid19. Until then we are just spectators with cautions
Climate change science and education has failed to provoke sufficient reaction to reverse the underlying cause in more than 20 years of advocacy. Initially COVID-19 solicited a similar response: it was "business as usual" despite widespread warnings of a serious threat that demanded a change in behaviour. Only when governments recognised the macro-threat of COVID-19 were decisive top-down actions taken, and immediately the people complied (at least where I live). Whether these measures will help remain to be seen, but the COVID-19 situation demonstrates the importance of acting early and the cornerstone role of political leadership. Unfortunately it also highlighting the lack of political leadership in the climate crisis which will still be with us when the COVID-19 crisis has run its course.
The only thing I am seeing is the CO2 emission reduction as a result of the world lock-down process. We can understand squarely how the global emissions from all human endeavors which are all on halt at the moment. In so doing, the climate change perception will be made succinct. This could only be achieved through a co-ordinated monitoring program.
Yes, recent studies shows that endangered sea turtles hatched on deserted beaches in Brazil, India amid COVID-19 lock-down. In Venice canals, residents also noticed a clear view of the sandy bed with shoals of tiny fish, scuttling crabs and multi-colored plant-life.
There is likely to be a massive decline in global carbon emissions this year, but that will only be temporary unless it is accompanied by an equally massive change in public perception of the vulnerability of modern societies. The crucial COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow, scheduled for November, has been postponed, so we have a - brief - opportunity to persuade our governments to make more ambitious commitments than they were planning to. It could go either way.
Yes, mostly positive effects. However, the society paid much more attention to the prevention from death(plenty of death), and in this scenario, the environmental issues can be somehow ignored, or probably, if these issues matters more than lives. Just like most of the doom movies, human won't unite until it's somehow not too late.
YES. COVID-19 pandemic opens all human being's eyes on the importance of protecting nature. Due to low emission of carbondioxide sky is more clear. Though COVID-19 negatively impact on human health, it positively impact on nature. This is the best time to think how to correct climate change.
Definitely. Previously, the effects of climate change were ignored by many who were not affected directly. With this virus EVERYONE is affected, therefore, every body is afraid to go back polluting nature like before.
Recent observations suggest significant reduction in ambient pollution at number of places. However this could be temporary, herein scientists should consider it as a case study to define future climate goals.
Yes, environment has been benefited though temporarily. It is assumed that people will start appreciating value of ecosystem services and biodiversity which in long run can be a motivating factor in the long run.
I appreciate comments and replies from experts to the question.
I am currently looking into similar research over West Africa, Since report of the index case in March, 2020. Climatic data (of temperature, rainfall and humidity) have been taken on daily basis to correlate the extreme weather conditions to the COVID-19 Pandemic environmental and health effects..
