Dear community,

we work on a employee satisfaction (done via questionnaire) project in an organisational setting. For the previous years, the questionnaire hat a 5 point Likert scale for all relevant items. Due to a change of software (for internal benchmak reasons) and service provider, the items in the questionnaire will be administered with a 10 point Likert scale. The items will remain the same.

Let's say Year 1 a 5 point Likert scale was used, in Year 2 a 10 point Likert scale. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but how can I compare the datasets from different years with the same items but different Likert scales?

Would a calculation of means still be comparable? Or would I have to do a recoding of one of the scales to match them?
