I fully agree with Anna Maria Labecka. Paraplast® is purified paraffin wax (approx 95%) with a synthetic plastic polymer Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) added (approx 5%) for resiliency and elasticity during microtomy of the paraffin block. This preparation is heated to slightly above melting point of paraffin (60-65ºC) in an oven or paraffin embedding center prepared for tissue embedding. Ester Wax has an added advantage of a lower melting point (10ºC less than paraffin), and is useful for specimens that are sensitive to heat distortion.
