I am looking for articles or any other resources on issues related to social class mobility and how issues of exclusion due to group membership- race, gender, caste, religion etc might impact this mobility.
A quick question. Are you interested in US social mobility or social mobility more broadly? I ask because you mention caste as one of the factors you would like to explore.
I can't help you with the US material but I can recommend Dr Chan's work on social mobility - see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~sfos0006/.
If you are specifically interested in caste issues you might want to locate such any such discussion in the changes in cultural over time. Milton Singer's book When a Great Tradition Modernizes is a dated but useful starting point.
I agree Bourdieu is important but if you want to use him to discuss social class and mobility you really need to read understand 'habitus' and how it can be used to establish or manipulate social position. Key readings are: "Outline of a Theory of Practice" (1977) (an astonishing omission for the wikipedia entry on Bourdieu) and "Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste (1979)"
