Three of the most critical issues facing every nation on earth is healthcare, government, and education. The inefficiencies generated in each of these areas (which focus on local optima) cost taxpayers many times over what the value is. These three areas need to be studied from a systems perspective identifying the few leverage points that determine the capabilities of the complete system and then developing simple but effective management (planning, scheduling, execution, control and measurement) systems that move the organization to the goal of the system. Some breakthroughs in healthcare have been made by Alex Knight across the UK healthcare supply chain (See Pride and Joy, a novel explaining the concepts he has applied over the past decade in the UK healthcare system). In government, Kristen Cox has made significant advances in the Utah state government in implementing system concepts in 24 different state departments. In education, TOCfE has made inroads in how to teach logic to kids to help with personal problems and to learn class materials more effectively. In each of these areas, only the tip of the iceberg has been identified. There is significantly more work needed in applying the scientific method to these social sciences areas. Various videos on the use of theory of constraints (at the TOCICO website under success stories) discuss the beginning of identifying and solving some of the problems in these three areas. Much research has to be conducted to make healthcare, government and education effective, high quality, and affordable.

I suggest a couple of things. 1) Review Build-to-demand.com and their products. They are looking to next generation Lean (using more tools than just Value Stream mapping) and 2) look to see how other tools like discrete event simulation can be added to the mix in the framework of lean. Also email greg@build-to-demand for a couple of white papers on a view of manufacturing dynamics.
