I am studying for my dissertation the difference between runners and non runners of lower limbs. I found a significant difference of runners and non runners of peak torque velocity and I would like to conduct a Cohen's d equation to find out the effect size this is some of the data:
Mean runner = 5.7714 SD = 4.08
Mean non runner = 20.8000 SD = 19.2
t value = 3.500
2 groups = 7 runners and 3 non runners

Cohen's d is the difference in the two group means divided by the standard deviation of both groups together.
As Peter Kindle rightly pointed out, there are several variants of the Cohens Effect Size (the calculations associated with which being widely available online). If I had to pick a place to start, Will Hopkins provides a nice description on his website 'sportsci.org' (direct link attached).
Another question you will need to ask is what thresholds you will use to interpret the magnitude of effect, and specifically what your 'smallest worthwhile difference' is for your given application. All are discussed in the link provided.
