Dear colleages, I have recently found this benthic worm (see picture), wich seems like an echiuran to me (I am no specialist at all). Its color pattern really intrigued me. Can you give me some more information about this particular specimen?
Hi Rodrigo, I agree, the color pattern is striking. As Leandro mentioned, this could be a nemertean. Might you have any other photographs that are focused with at least one at somewhat higher magnification of the head showing what looks like a proboscis? Lastly, where was this specimen collected, depth, and habitat? Kind regards, Tom
I agree with Leandro, it does look like a Nemertean. What is confusing to me are the paired cirri, antenna, or palps on the posterier end of the specimen. Pete
Hi, thank you for all of your answers. For those who asked, I will try to obtain more detailed pictures. As I said, I am not an expert, so your opinions are surely important to me.
Tom Trott The specimen was collected at low depht, in the intertidal zone of a beach at the northeastern coast of Brazil. Actually, we were collecting macroalgae at the time, then this creature just appeared accidentaly in one of our samples. Unfortunetaly, it lost its amazing colors due to alcohol fixation, altough the pattern is still perceptible.
I agree with Leandro. It look like a nemertean to me!! but also i think a better pic is necesary!!! maybe Yander L. Diez could give a better opinion about them!!
