I am working with four different species of plant to find their anti-ulcerant activity. i have found one species is very potent. Now I need to identify the chemical group that might be causing this activity. But I have only two weeks to submit this paper. Please somebody show me a short way.
I think you can do fractional extraction by using from non polar to semi polar solvent (e.g. hexane, CH2Cl2, Acetone, Methanol). Test each of the fraction for its activity, than fraction that have activity can be further analyzed using GC-MS or LC-MS or LC-NMR. Identity of the compounds can be predicted by using some on line date base (e.g. Metlin or NIST etc.).

you need chromatographic separation. Mobile phase depend on your extract type. at first you can go to column then other process gradually based on your desire. I hope you get every things. Best ofuck.
I agree with Gunawan answer. You can quickly develop a fractionation based on activity and works only with your fractions it shows positive results. However, you just have a couple of weeks to submit this, I try to focus on the medium and polar fractions, using the non-polar solvents just to clean the extract.
Problems to check:
1- Take a look in the literature about the chemical compounds of your plants, and check its related activity. If your plant was very studied, maybe you are seeing the activity of a very common compound.
2 - The chromatographic methods to isolate the chemical compound from your extract will depend about several factors, check each one to choose the best way to apply to your sample.
- GC-MS is very good and the libraries helps a lot, but will be nice to use if your compounds presents non-polar structures (that I didn't expect, based on the medicinal chemistry studies of the anti-ulcerant drugs, but I could be wrong).
- LC-MS and LC-NMR is totally great for this experiment. If you have this, use it! This is the most quickly way!

Hello Gunwan Thank you for your answer, I did the fraction and the better effect found in ethanolic fraction. I also did primary phytochemical analysis and TLC. I got presence of several compound from those analysis. Now can you please suggest me due the presence of which compound my extract is showing anti-ulcerant effect? Just like presence of flavonoid and phenolic group cause better anti-oxidant effect.
If you have LC MS, than it will be very nice you can do it using LCMS, you can predict the compounds by comparing with on line data base (e.g. Metlin).
But you can do it also simply via TLC, Please open the CBS Camag data base below, than insert flavonoid or phenolic, you will find many publications on it. Good luck

You can use bio-guided (TLC auto-biograph) chromatographic isolation to locate your bioactive compounds rather than undergoing blind isolation. You can as well combine this chromatographic methods with spectroscopic as described by previous contributors.
The compounds identified from the species/ family of the plant species and parallel activity guided fractionation/ sub-fractionation & isolation work as suggested will definitely help you to reach the goal in stipulated time. You may require some more time for the work.
