According to AOSA and ISTA rules, usually seed scientists use seedling vigor index formula for seedling dried in ovens. I wonder if it be used for seedlings fresh weight especially in silage and forage crops ?
If the vigour index doesn't require dry weight, then you can use fresh seedlings. Vigour index is usually seedling length x some other factor such as % or speed of germination, so fresh seedlings will be fine imo :)
the seedling vigour index can be assessed by two ways 1) SVI-i =Seed Germination % x Seedling length and SVI-ii = Seed germination % x Seedling dry weight. i think we cant assess the fresh weight of seedlings through seed vigour index.....
Speed of germination: High speed of germination is an indication of vigorous seed lot .Number of germinated seeds are counted every day from the first day and the cumulative index is made by the formula
n1/1 + n2/2 + ………+ nx/x = N Where,n1…..nx are the number of seed germinated on day x.1…...x are the number of days.
High value of N indicated high seed vigour. Considered as germinated when the radical has appeared hence, it should be counted daily and seeds observed as germinated should be removed (Maguire, 1962).
While determining seedling vigor we multiply total seedling length (Root length + Shoot length) with that of germination percent of the seed lot, as such it is not possible to use the same for determining fresh weight of seeds.
