Children are socialized in their homes and communities to use language in these contexts. I once had a preschooler complained that his classmate told him that his pencil was broken but he insisted: "Miss my pencil can't be broken; broken is when you have no money." :-). Then we have with the advancement in technology, the digital language of social media, which students use as their everyday language. We need to understand these contexts in order to communicate effectively with our students to make learning understandable and relevant for them. Attached is a conference paper on using social media to teach EFL students English that may interest you.
