I am working on the bio-electrochemical two-chamber reactor. Proton exchange membrane is used to separate two chambers and lead proton (H+) moving from anodic chamber to cathodic chamber. I also want to keep an anoxic environment in the cathodic chamber. However, I observed the increase of oxygen concentration in cathodic chamber during my experiment. Can anyone help me to explain this phenomenon and give me some comments on how to prevent oxygen passing from anodic chamber to cathodic chamber?
oxygen will partly permeate PEM, CEM and AEM. oxygen generates from water electrolysis, and you can eliminate oxygen in the anode by exposing to gas (Ar or N2). in our lab, we use Ar recycle in the anode for eliminating oxygen. This methode is useful for eliminating the disturbance of oxygen for biosynthese in biocathode.

All the list membrane may effectively prevent the charged ions transportation from the membrane but it is not so effective for uncharged molecules as the oxygen you mentioned above. Take the PEM as an example, the PEM is modified by the sulfone in the surface so it is negatively charge under the normal condition, making it effective to transport the positively charged proton or sodium or potassium. For the neutral molecule, it would not effect repulse migration under the concentration gradient.
