Can one explain why anhydrous copper(II) silfate is colorless?

Hydrated copper(II) sulfate is blue but when it is heated to lose water it becomes colorless. What explanation can be given for the change of color.

One of the resons could be the absence of water of hydration , no ligand at all , quite contrary to copper sulphate ( blue in color) having water of hydration as ligands.
