Usually DMF (Dimethyl Formamide), DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) and ethylene carbonate have been used for polyacrylonitrile production. Is there any literature on the use of NMP for the same?
Dear all, better to focus on the polymerization of acrylonitrile in nitrogen containing solvents, to get the full image on their usefullness. The following free to download link gives additional information. My Regards
Hi Siddharth Kulkarni! I usually use DMF as it is a better solvent for the polymerization of acrylonitrile, like these articles:
Article Homo- and copolymerization of N-(2-thiazolyl)methacrylamide ...
Article Synthesis and Thermal Characteristics of N-(Thiazol-2-yl)met...
Thesis POLYMERIZATION AND COPOLYMERIZATION OF NEW HETEROCYCLIC MONO...
However, the NMP solvent is still working as the other professors said above. Also, the following PDF file is free to download and gives more additional information about some solvents e.g. THF; DMSO; DMAA; DMF; NMP with PAN.
Thanks a lot for the links, these were very helpful.
Can you kindly elaborate how solubility of PAN in DMSO at higher temperatures (120 C) is desirable than in other solvents (DMF, NMP) which can dissolve PAN only till 100 C? Thanks in advance.
Thanks a lot prof. Frank. I came across an article which states that it is difficult to remove NMP from PAN after spinning due to high boiling point of NMP. Also an article shows that the DMF/PAN flory parameters are very close to each others which is good for spinning. NMP/PAN flory parameters are far away.
What are the thoughts of you and other respected researchers in this forum? Thanks in advance. The articles are enclosed for reference.
Many thanks for the article. I would also like to know from you and other researchers in the forum whether there exists any article on the similar theme which compares NMP applicability in acrylonitrile polymerization/spinning with other solvents such as DMF and DMSO? Thanks in advance.
Thanks a lot. Some of the points which I have accumulated are summarized as follows.
Request researchers in the forum to add points or provide another perspective. Attaching the articles also for the reference:
The Flory-Huggins parameter for DMF-PAN is lower than NMP-PAN: Lower the parameter, more is the affinity between polymer solvent.
The solubility parameter of DMF is closer to PAN than NMP: Smaller the difference, stronger is the dissolving ability of solvent.
The Flory parameter for DMSO-PAN is lower than DMF-PAN
After processing at 100 C, PAN becomes insoluble in DMF and NMP but becomes insoluble in DMSO only after 120 C.
DMSO has a stronger dipole moment than DMF: stronger interaction between DMSO-acrylonitrile than DMF- acrylonitrile and thus easy coupling between the PAN chains in DMSO.
