if so will this research challenge be tightly coupled with knowledge discovery. its well known that a picture is worth a thousand words. therefore there is a need for automated interpretation methods to aid end users who are illiterate as it were

Yes, of course ) VA/Visualization demands model of situation, and incorrect choice of model could provide severe biased interpretations, error in decision making, etc.
We (in Russia) develop VA as eye-witnessing technique that helps minimize errors due to selection of incorrect model, or avoid model developing completely. Good VA is VA of direct perception.
We collect database of errors in VA-induced decision making; some are published - unfortunately, Russian only. We have plan to publish our results in English too in future.
Yes, it can. More importantly, misinterpretation and lack of readability of VA/visualization can lead to serious consequences. I'd recommend you take a look at Edward Tufte's texts on how the Columbia accident was fostered by similar problems (try reading the second chapter from his book Visual Explanations. Yes, a visualisation can be both very insightful and misleading. A visualisation can suggest certain relationship between data items where such relationship does not exist. Take for example a typical word cloud. It is an insightful representation of text, but having one word placed next to another may suggest non-existent relationship between these two words in the text to some users.
And yes, identifying such issues in a particular type of visualisation can be an interesting research topic.
