A colleague of mine recently saw a talk in which the presenter claimed to deliver a membrane-impermeable small molecule metabolite into cultured cells using Lipofectamine (or a similar cationic lipid-based transfection reagent). I'm skeptical that this would work as advertised, but if it did this would be a very useful method for us. However, a quick check hasn't turned up any useful references.
Has anyone ever tried this, or seen a reference they could share? Ideally, I'd like to deliver something like, say, 3-phosphoglycerate into cells at a high enough rate to support a metabolic pathway.
Lipofectamine is one of several nanosystems to do so. The group where I got my masters degree used a LNC developed by our colleagues.

Before encapsulating or adsorbing your molecule to a nanosystem you may want to investigate which size, zeta potentia and type of polymers used would be of best use to your nanocapsules/particle so you could deliver an impermeable molecule to your target cell or tissue. Good luck!

Lipid-based transfection reagent has the potential to deliver small molecules. Based on the structure of the 3-Phosphoglyceric acid, hydrophobic part and phosphate group, it can work. However, I will privilege a reagent ;ore suited for such application such as Pro-DeliverIN.
