I am looking for any resources which may be useful in a study I am conducting on the impacts that language may have on our perception of crimes. I will be using headlines which convey a particular crime in a variety of lights; one which may appear to justify the perpetrator's actions, and one which portrays the crime in a neutral, non-biased way. I am looking for sources/previous studies which may back up this idea.
I suggest you have a look at the headlines from the perspective of quantitative linguistics. I would say that collocation analysis of selected words may be quite revealing as to how crime is presented in newspapers. Should you like any assistance in such research, feel free to contact me.

It definately can. Especially when it comes to the shade of meaning. Specific words can emphasis negativity while others can highlight postivity. If you can a thief a ‘criminal’ vs. a ‘petty thief’ the two give different impressions. We assume a criminal is hardened and a petty thief is just a harmless pick pocket.
