Beta lactams are one of the promising antibiotics since early antibiotic era. But very few reports claim their use against Mtb Lactams are more active against gram positive bacteria due to easy access to peptidoglycan, however monobactams are active against gram negative bacteria due their high affinity towards PBP3. So can we use lactams against Mtb? If not then why?
Interesting question. Here is a paper that addressed this issue. Beta-lactamases seem to be the main problem.

there are several reports in which beta lactam antibiotics such as carbapennams are administered with lactmase inhibitors and first line and second line antitb drug. such combination showed good results. My question is regarding the use of beta lactam type compounds against tb by modifying it so that it would not be degraded by beta lactmase. Can we do that?
