Hello,

I have a question about the application of the STM technique. I want to characterize a composite consisting of a metallic matrix and a boride reinforcing phase. Although the surface of the sample is prepared very carefully, it is not flat enough to use constant height mode. Therefore, I have to use constant current mode. I want to know whether I can use the constant current mode to visualize the reinforcing boride particles having an average size of 80 nm. It looks to me that when the tip is above the boride phase, it will get closer to the surface to achieve the predetermined current value. I believe it may even hit the surface.

Is it possible to make the surface completely flat so that I can use constant height mode?
