Most papers use graphite powder to prepare GO. We want to prepare it from graphite flakes (more cheaper), is it possible? I am afraid of surface area reaction.
Anyway, how to prepare graphite powder from flakes? Is it just to grind or the process needs some special consideration.

You can prepare GO from graphites of various particle size. The finer the graphite, the higher oxidation degree can be obtained.
In this work we used various flake graphites from 45 to 500 µm :

Graphite flakes are larger in size due to which they would probably suffer from incomplete oxidation as compared to graphite powder which is much smaller in size. I think a rather simple way to reduce the graphite flakes to powder could be grinding the flakes using a cryomill.
yes, you can. just follow procedure for common graphite. maybe you should increase time for oxidation
