I want to functionalize CNT using H2SO4:HNO3 (3:1), but using the ultrasonic bath I can just increase the temperature up to 80 C. I have done it before, but the dispersion was not stable. Can I use magnetic stirring with 100-140 C to increase the dispersion stability?
Dear Mahsa Amiri, I think it is inefficient in breaking agglomerates, and consequently, surface area for functionalization will be much lower. For the stabilization you can play on other factors such as concentration and surfactant(s). My Regards

Ultrasonic agitation(MA) can not be replaced by magnetic stirring(MS). UA is much efficient than MS. In some cases MS might give the same effect as UA but not in all processes.
I may be of some help if you give me the details of the reaction you want to perform.

Each treatment has its advantages and disadvantages, particularly in terms of final purification and oxidation yield of carbon nanotubes. The method using sonication is very efficient in disaggregating agglomerates, allowing to obtain samples with the highest oxidation rate. However, sonication can create many defects in the final structure of carbon nanotubes. The magnetic stirring oxidation method leads to lower oxidation yields while maintaining the structural integrity of the carbon nanotubes. Please see the link below:

Thank you very much for your reply, I am going to functionalize CNT using H2SO4 and HNO3 (3:1). However I have some issues with this procedure, 1) after acid reflux I need to wash CNTs, but the CNTs are dispersed in the acid and centrifugation is not effective to precipitate CNTs. 2) after a few days the CNT bundles appear in the solution, which means the functionalization was not that fruitful.

You may have to check your ultrasonic device. Those ultrasonic parameters like power, frequency, amplitude, time of sonication etc. should be set carefully; otherwise, your treatment may not be effective.
