Can I use formalin to preserve my water samples in detecting protozoans because I cannot process the samples immediately?

Hi everyone. I am currently working on my Undergraduate Study which is detecting Waterborne Protozoans from Water Samples. I cannot process my water samples immediately. And the travel hour from my sampling site is approximately 6 hours to the laboratory. I am asking if I can use formalin to preserve my samples or what other ways I can preserve my water samples before I can process it. Thank you and good day.
