I did quite a bit of asking around about this myself. I was concerned about how many different ways do I have to describe the mechanics of my study when writing journal articles on various findings. The response from editors was, generalized, that all sentences need to pass the same originality tests we would expect from our best students. Generally I require no more than 5 words of overlap but that is difficult when describing the same facts over and over. Imposing that limit on my own possible self-plagiarism was challenging, but possible.

I published my dissertation before articles, the opposite of your current situation. Since the dissertation is being judged in your institution, this might be best asked of your committee chair.

Where you want to use the content directly, you can as well get the copyrights from the journals (mostly free in Elsevier and other publishers)

Most likely, in that case, you have to paraphrase the sentences or statement and also make reference to your published work where is cited. You don't have to copy words to words (verbatim), even though is your original work. Try and rearrange it so that turnitin will not catch up with you as self-plagiarism. Also , follow the guideline of Dr. Subir Bandyopadhyay to include the publications at the end of your thesis.

Self-plagiarism is the use of one's own previous work in another context without citing that it was used previously. The idea is that the writer should let the reader know that this was not the first use of the material. Republished text is a glaring example of self-plagiarism.

You can get rights and content of your publications through copy right clearance centers of the publishers. In most of the cases, publishers allow the reuse of content.

You can use your thesis or part of it as long as you include in notes what you take from the thesis. You can even explain at the beginning that what you publish is part of a more extensive work that corresponds to the doctoral thesis. Here the important thing is to inform the sources and also what the article adds that is not in the thesis as advance of your investigations
