I am planning to do a research to evaluate food safety knowledge, attitude and practices of food handling handling personnel and microbial assessment in a small factory with less than 20 people; which means the population N is 14. Is it justifiable to conduct in-depth interviews on such a number?I need this information as a guide to conducting microbial sampling and analysis and to identify whether there will a necessity for training the food handlers particularly on GMPs.
you can repeat the evaluation 3-5 times in different dates and times to ascertain from results obtained.

Yes you could but results of the food safety knowledge, attitude and practices of food handling handling personnel will not be more exploratory and cannot be adequately generalized to the whole industry. Food safety knowledge, attitude and practices of food handling handling personnel and the microbial performance of single small companies will be largely biased by the clustering of food safety culture and training or lack thereof depending on managerial commitment to staff development. Production stuff remuneration and staff turnover also affect attitude, practices and food safety outcomes and these vary with company size. However small groups can provide more indepth information.
It is a must to conduct awareness programmes time to time to train the food handlers particularly not only GMPs but also GHPs (Good Hyginic practices) for personnel as well as for factory ( factory sanitation) in any food industry -small, medium or large scale. Knowledge on food safety, attitude and practices of food handling handling personnel and microbial assessment may vary according to the food industry (small, medium or large). Therefore, if you do only for small scale industry better to anlyze minimally more than three small scale industry rather than depend on one small scale food industry to get better results.
