In modeling composite plates in a Nastran/Patran program using shell elements, results in the output file are for the mid-plane of each layer of composite. Does anybody know if it can be possible to model the plate so the result will give stress values at a specific thickness? If that is not possible than is it possible at least to get stresses for top and bottom surfaces of each layer?
I don't know about the software you are using but in ANSYS you simply tell the programme which surface you want to look at (top, mid, bot).

Already did. Found the reference that it is possible but not how its done.

I am using ANSYS. However, you can try some of these trails:
1) try to change the position of the global coordinate system and position new one at the layer that you want because may be the results depending on the location of the coordinate system.
2) have you tried to read the (nodes or elements) stress results. If you know which nodes or elements you are looking for then, may be you can make a trend for the stress behavior at the elements or nodes that you have select manually. I know it is difficult but you can try.
otherwise, try youtube for some tutorials.
