I am conducting a systematic review and after screening have come up with 9 included studies 6 of which are systematic reviews. Am I able to use these in my report and discussion? As the articles the reviews utilise / mention are outside of our date range?
Hi Jennifer.
To start with, if your literature search has brought about 6 systematic reviews (SR) you need to think about building a rational for your research. Now what does that mean?
When you do any piece of work, you build reasoning that why this research is important. So if there are 6 SRs being done already, why there is a need to conduct another one?
1. Are the previous SRs old. If yes, you can only include the most recent articles, not been part of other reviews. For this, inclusion of SRs and the articles part of previous reviews is not recommended to avoid duplication of findings.
2. If you are focusing on a different aspect than the previous SRs then try to find the original articles (part of those reviews) and include them. Also, mention in the rationale that your subject focus is different than the previous systematic reviews. For this as well, inclusion of SRs is not recommended for the same reason as above
3. If you include systematic reviews, your study will be a ‘systematic review of systematic reviews‘ which only includes SRs and not other type of articles.

So as you have found 6 SRs already, first think about whether you need to add one more SR in it or not. If you decide yes, then
Make a list of the individual papers used in each SR and See the total overlapping papers. Decide from this the number of Individual papers you will have in your SR. Would that be enough? if yes,
Create a good Inclusion and exclusion criteria to justify the use of all these papers as well as create a good rationale on why your SR is required.
and you will be ready to work on the paper.
