Hi everyone,
In my research thesis, I need to make a hydrophobic surface without using fluorocarbon molecules. After some research, I found out that silanes are quite good at repelling water. The problem is that in most of the researches toluene was used, which is not safe and environmental-friendly at all. Is there any other solvent that I can use, which is not toxic and easy to clean off the surface?

they make a hydrophobic surface by silanization, using hexane as solvent. So I was wondering why some use toluene while others use hexane. What is the role of the solvent in the silanization reaction?Thank you again for your answer

as you might know better than me : Toluene and toluene-containing volatile substances are the most commonly abused solvents with a demonstrative addictive potential for humans. The misuse of these substances is associated with the activation of brain areas involved in both addiction and learning. As potential substrates for both processes, the regions of the mesocorticolimbic system have been identified.
On the other hand , Solvents that are used are often primarily selected for technical function and cost, with physical and human health hazards as secondary concerns. Toluene, hexane, methyl ethyl ketone, xylene and methylene chloride are chemicals in commercially available .
There are a number of aqueous or alcohol-based silanes available in the commercial world. They are used in the building industry for the hydrophobic treatment of concrete surfaces.
Your comment suggests that you are not primarily interested in silanes but in creating hydrophobic surfaces. If this is your target then there are many alternative choices for many different surfaces.
