Can the simplified up-down method (SUDO) for measuring mechanical nociception in rodents using von Frey filaments be combined with data generated from the conventional up-down method by Chaplan?

I suppose the simple answer is- yes. But the more complicated answer is- it depends.
Both tests give an approximate mechanical withdrawal threshold and, from reading the paper, the SUDO method seems to be less variable but in keeping with the up-down method. If you wish to move from the up-down method in your lab and want to compare between studies for validation then I don't see combining the two methods is an issue.
However, combining two methods within a study or series of experiments isn't appropriate as you would be introducing another variable. It would also be difficult to justify combining data if the study was written up for publication. I'd think reviewers would query the reasons for two different methods.

I agree with Ian. I have found that even small variations in the up-down method can change the data considerably, so is important to be consistent within the same study.
