For me, for the case of teacher and students in graduate level (in university) can be implemented. My students always had problem about managing the time of their study due to they registered many courses in many faculties. So I usually did not fix my course time. I always make an appointment with my students which the time that they are available.
Hello Prof. Suraj, the question is very much valid. I have an assertive yes to the question subject to conditions. The predictability of the curriculum delivery should not be compromised. I have a skepticism, will it not reduce the academic institution to a mere point of sales or just another kiosk for service delivery. Let the deliberations flow in boundlessly.
Can flexi-time be implemented in an educational institution?
In teaching context, yes it is possible to implement flexi-time for teachers / lecturers e.g. come in early go home early, too many teaching hours for this week can be replaced by time-off in subsequent week(s), only come into physical class according to assigned teaching schedule / time table - non-teaching time e.g. preparing classes, marking papers, supervising students can be done outside teaching office or at home etc. However, these types of flexi-time teaching should be implemented with all the teachers' deliverables defined clearly so that regardless where & when their deliverables are accountable.
In learning context, also yes it is possible to implement flexi-time learning for students e.g. through online learning management websites / systems / portals etc. so that busy working adults or students all over the world at different time zones can learn at their own time at their own pace.
We are implementing flexi-time in our university for the non-teaching personnel.on the basis of a national law. For teachers, however, we do not have to implement the law because the system or method of faculty loading is already very time-flexible to the teacher.
The concept of flexi-time may be good as such , but may not be so good for educational institutions, and may end up in commercialization of the same. The flexi-time is good for persons, who are in possession of basic qualifications and are looking for enhancement of knowledge in the chosen field in which they are already working. For students aspiring to build up career in particular field in pursuance of basic qualification, must undergo fixed time period course, in order to acquire knowledge for creating a base. Everybody is a learner throughout his or her life. Acquiring knowledge does not have age or time bar.
Yes, flex-time would be very effective in an educational setting for faculty. It is essentially the system that is currently in place in many institutions. Faculty work core hours as well as many varied hours depending on evening or weekend classes. Formalizing what is currently in practice would only serve to improve the system and make faculty committee meeting times more easily scheduled.
