I have sometimes this privilege of teaching excellent students who do not care to do better than their peers. Their motives are different. They want their friends to do well. But how are your students like? Among your students, what percentage are intrinsically motivated and want to study to lead better, more informed personal lives and to be better citizens of their countries, and of this world?  Can extrinsically motivated students change to be more intrinsically motivated and be more concerned about knowledge and skills, than grades? How?
