I have read a paper "Visible-to-UV/Violet Upconversion Dynamics in Er 3+ -Doped
Oxyfl uoride Nanoscale Glass Ceramics". It is said this material can upconvert visible light to UV light. However, when they explain the mechinism, they jus used the energy transfer of Er ion, no mentioning the effect of host. so i want to ask if i change other host, can the new material still upconvert visilbe to uv. Because the energy level of Er doesnt change, it is just a intrinstic property of Er.
If the crystalline structure stays the same, probably yes, it should work too. However, the efficiency may substantially change as substitution of cations changes the crystal field. Make sure, the purity of your material is high enough

Only slightly, the effect of the host for 4f intraband transitions is mainly to lift the parity selection rule in order to increase the probability of the otherwise forbidden force electric dipole transitions. The phonon frequencies of the host should be possibly small and the bandgap large enough to accomodate all involved transitions. Otherwise, as far as I undestand, host is not directly involved in the electronic transitions.
