Yes, people can learn new things without a teacher. And yes, the possibilities to learn increases constantly with Internet information access and more kinds of communication (=decreased information friction).
I think the teacher that can be substituted by technology, should be. But the teacher that uses technology will always remain. Learning is a social thing, but not necessarily a physical- closeness issue.

Well, lets ask the question, and take out the 'e'. Can learning happen without a teacher? I think we all know the answer to this question is yes, learning can happen without a teacher. And so therefore, e-learning can also happen without a teacher. Obviously, learning happens across a spectrum, and all of us learn continuously in both formal and informal contexts, practices and processes. I think your question is asking "can formal e-learning happen without a teacher?". And in this sense, I think it is clear that the teachers role is central to the learning that takes place through the development of a formal curriculum, defined outcomes and clear learning activities that can be evaluated through formative assessment. Of course, informal e-learning can happen based on the motivations, capacities, interests and goals of each individual learning. Informal learning also accounts for the majority of adult learning (up to 75% in some studies).
This technique or idea in contemporary education is closely related to the infrastructure within country and requires huge resources for application in developing countries (including republic of Iraq ) compared to developed countries as USA , UK and so on,

My answer is no. E-learning is not a subst for teachers, rather it is a way to enhance the reach of teachers through technology. E-learning helps to mitigate the limitation posed by time and geographicaly dispersed students with common learning needs.
Even where there's agent-based instruction for e-learning, the agent-model needs being optimised continually and progressively to provide a learning that is similar to what exists in traditional classroom.
When the radio and television was first invented, people thought these technologies were going to replace teachers. We have found out that they did not. The technology is to be in the service of the pedagogy and not the other way around. There will always be the need for teachers/facilitators, but the teaching environment might be different, i.e., online teaching or through video conference like we are experiencing with the virus. Teaching is about relationship and interactions, not about the technology. The technology hopefully should help build and enhance these interactions when the class can't meet.
We do not need to substitute we need to upgrade! Using virtual environments can and must be added to learning in mass=schools! Since now we can not gather it is a kind of substitute but not for long! A day will come that schools will gradually open. Then we, the teachers and the whole world of education will have to reconsider instruction!

Dheyaa, I do it for years with children of elementary schools. I did my Ph.D. on that. My pupils are not surprised by distance learning, in fact, they were surprised that their other regular teachers started teaching with the internet.
According to John Hattie (Visible Learning), the teacher is so-to-say the pivot of all learning activity.
E-Learning is technology that enables communication, presentation, monitoring, feedback etc. I personally do not see how a mere set of (powerful) tools can replace the craftsman -- if I may say so.
With the major lockdown on public life that we are currently experiencing in several European states, e-learning tools bridge the gap between the learners and their trainers/instructors/mentors. That is what they are essentially designed to do.
So, for my part (as a language teacher), interpersonal communication is the key issue in all teaching, be it face-to-face or online. My students know who they are interacting with and that makes them overcome the restrictions. The technology itself does not do any teaching. @ Ilan Bar Shalom: I think you are hitting the nail on the head. E-learning technology is an upgrade, not a replacement.
@Michaelkrebs,. I would agree with much of what your saying...however in your first statement, I wold exchange the term learning for education. Learning can and does exist without a teacher...and so can e-learning. We all learn everyday through different activities and experiences...and much learning is informal, socially supported and self-directed.
I don't think that this is the answer to your question.
But it's important all the teachers have the ability to use and develop e-learning.

E learning should never and if it is even being considered; will never replace a teacher. However e-learning requires teacher roles and methodologies to change to become a successful eductor in this 21 century.

Indeed, e-learning is a requirement of a successful teacher in the 21 century.
It won't be a substitute for classroom learning and teacher up to graduation level. But after graduation level E-learning may be a substitute for classroom learning and teacher.
It is not possible for e-learning to replace the teacher. It is only a tool. It cannot even replace the student, who with the teacher, bring about the learning. The teacher sets up the programme at each stage. The machine can not even learn because it does not have the capability. It is simply a human design. The tool can never replace the worker.

Not yet. Learning means that you execute your home exercises, assignments, course works, and so on. Only an experienced teacher can assess your work and give feedback. Of course, it is possible to investigate learning material on your own, but the final assessment and feedback from the teacher is essential. I suppose that later AI will do it, but not now. For this purpose, we need Autonomous intelligence, not just an artificial one.
