Can cresyl violet be used as a counterstain replacement for hematoxylin?

I am staining for amyloid plaques using Sigma-Aldrich's congo red kit. The first step is counterstaining with Mayer’s Hematoxylin Solution or Hematoxylin Solution, Gill No. 3. Can cresyl violet be used for this counterstaining step in place of hematoxylin?

Hi Vinvent,

Yes you can use cresyl violet instead of hematoxylin but cresyl violet will only stain neurons.
