Diabetes develops when the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels breaks down. It can either result from damage to beta cells in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin, known as type 1 diabetes, or from the body becoming insensitive to the hormone, which leads to type 2 diabetes.
The diabetes specialists point out that many key metabolic tissues in the body, including beta cells in the pancreas, adipose (fat storage) tissue, the small intestine, and kidneys, contain ACE2 receptors.
They believe that when these viruses bind to ACE2 receptors, they may trigger changes in glucose metabolism that worsen preexisting diabetes or cause the condition to develop for the first time.

Well according to recent research not only does COVID-19 have the ability to worsen existing diabetes, but a recent report also found that the virus may be triggering new-onset diabetes.

No. Covid-19infection would not trigger diabetes in normal healthy person. However if the Covid 19 infected person has a comorbidity of Diabetes then this would lead to worsening of diabetic condition hence requiring management.

Covid-19 can cause pneumonia, kidney failure, blood clots, arrhythmias, and even heart attacks, but the potential that the virus may also lead to the onset of diabetes provides a new set of implications and potential complications for survivors.
A recent report in Nature details the rationale and proposed mechanisms behind the ability of the virus to damage specialized cells in the pancreas that make insulin, otherwise known as beta cells, contained in surrounding specialized cells (islets).
When beta cells are destroyed, and the body is unable to manufacture insulin, a person develops elevated blood sugar, known as hyperglycemia, which effectively switches the body to an alternate pathway for energy using ketones and ketone bodies as a primary source. Using ketones bodies for energy will trigger a dangerous state where the body produces harmful acids, leading to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which can be fatal if left untreated.
What’s clear is that diabetes is already recognized as a key risk factor for developing severe Covid-19, and persons with this condition have a higher risk of death.

COVID 19 infection by itself would certainly not trigger and produce diabetes in so called normal healthy person. Ofcourse if a diabetic person gets infected with Covid 19, then the diabetes can get a boost and become severe.
Research ought to be conducted to epidemiological prove my views written in the previous writeup.
On its own Covid 19 infection would certainly not cause/trigger diabetes until çomorbidies exist in the person.
Evidence from tissue studies and some people with COVID-19 shows that the virus damages insulin-producing cells.
