The current convention for definition of a native conformation of a polypeptide molecule is: that the [native] conformation is the global polypeptide conformation that must be assumed in order for a polypeptide to perform function(s) (which in most cases is the primary function). However, an implied assumption, is that the global polypeptide conformation is necessary for function, and thus a required parameter for such measure of function. This however seems unlikely to be a universal parameter, since it may not be generalized to hold true for all protein molecules. Please tell me what you think.

PS: I wrote a preprint on this issue, and posed an alternate definition.
