One of the main, and not solved yet problem, in AI fundamental research, is the definition of Intelligence. But, when in theoretical and practical approaches researchers refers to IA concrete issues, they use terms like: memory, perception, awareness, learning, and so on, all them related to Psychological functions. Then, when talking of creation of intelligent artifacts, are we talking of creation of artifacts with artificial Psyche?
I think It would clarify the selection and the application of many psychological theories in AI.
As a philosopher who works on the philosophy of mind, I don't think psyche and intelligence are interchangeable terms. I think a cat lacks a psyche but has intelligence; like Descartes, I regard a cat as an electrochemical machine. So I think it's possible to construct a machine with the intelligence of lower animals. But it's not possible to construct a machine with a psyche, as this implies freedom of the will, intentionality, self-identity over time, and so forth.
@Kirk MacGregor. Then, the origin of the psyche is linked with the advent of man, and exists only in man. But considering evident similarities, one could think that should exist some relation between intelligence, existing in animals, and the psyche, might be they are related by evolutionary transformation.

As such, the psychological construct called intelligence, which is common to both animals and humans, is a mental capacity which facilitates the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills and is related to organism's perspicacity.

I think that the root of all problems is the lack of rigorous definition of Intelligence and Psyche. But on the other hand, despite the wide acceptance of differences between those concepts, in fact, when dealing with IA applications and theorizations, terms of widely recognized Psychological functions are used as components of intelligent agents, representations, modeling, etc. Then, there should exist some kind of relation between intelligence and Psyche, which could be partOf, memberOf, or subsetOf, which could be obvious in natural Intelligence but more complicated and specific, when they are considered in AI.
