In the framework of introduction of sustainable forest management practices for mountain forest landscapes of Northern and North-Eastern Armenia we are looking for best practices on mitigation or reduction of local people dependence on firewood collected regularly or an uncontrolled manner from local forest ecosystems.

I live in an area in which firewood is used to heat many if not most houses. The answer, I believe, is simple. Where there is an affordable alternative, people will turn away from firewood. In my experience, propane is not an affordable alternative but natural gas is.

Thank you for sharing your experience. The problem with our case are high prices for gas consumption. Local households prefer to use comparatievly cheap fuel-wood, despite gas distribution infrastructure exist in more forest dependent communities. Goverment does not have money to subsidise for gas consumption and thus put high pressure on scarce mountain forest ecosytems that are very rich in biodiversity. Alas.
