I am looking for materials with low x-ray attenuation for tomography applications. They need to be machined into small (1-10mm) pieces, and have good thermal shock properties (not fracture during heating) under low tensile loads. I have been using a combination of Boron Nitride and Al2O3 (which work OK, depending on temperature), but does anyone know of something better?
Ceramics must be dense or may be porous? Porous silicon nitride of the elements can be processed.

However, could you give us much clearer understanding on the exploitation temperature and gas atmosphere your materials are working in. Otherwise the discussion/consideration of this issue is absolutely useless...
