Dear Nirmala,

About 20 years ago I inserted MSW into the energy matrix of Brazil. Through experiments, I discovered that its LHV is approximately the same as that of sugar cane bagasse. The result was published in Portuguese in a Brazilian journal. Here is the reference:

Some time ago we published a paper on this, T.E. Jensen, D.J. Eatough and L.D. Hansen, "Discarded Energy: The Heat of Combustion of Garbage," J. Chem. Educ., 54, 700 (1977), and the US National Bureau of Standards also did some combustion measurements that were published at about the same time. You can also use Thornton's rule to get a good estimate if you know the approximate composition.
