The optimum tilt angle depends on the period during which you want to maximize production. If it is for the whole year, the classic rule of thumb is tilt=latitude. If it is rather for summer or winter use latitude+15 or latitiude-15, resp. There are variations to this rule depending on local conditions, but the optimum is only a smooth function of all this, so sometimes other design constraints are more important (e.g., existing roof slope, shading...)

Dear Sir Chris, this article is not available on the given link. Also I have read many papers and authors mentioned that they make Matlab program to calculate Solar irrdations or Optimum tilt angle, and as I am not good in Matlab thats why put a request on RG...

could please introduce me some papers in which the authors used matlab to optimize tilt angle. I guess they used genetic algorithm to optimize tilt angle but to do that we need to know which factors did they use for optimization.

The optimum tilt angle of a collector / absorber depends on your application. If you want to maximize the collection throughout the year, the tilt angle is equal to the local latitude. If you want to maximize the collection in winter, the tilt angle is latitude + 15 ° and if you want to maximize the collection in summer, this angle is latitude - 15 °. Moreover, for the estimation of daily irradiation you can download the free software Geosol from web site:

With this software you can also to do the optimization study of the tilt angle of the collector / absorber.

There are simple mathematical models that can determine the radiation on a tilt surface with the extraterrestrial radiation and weather conditions as inputs (eg Liu Jordan) . From the radiation in the earth's surface, the incidence angle of the solar beam acording with the surface tilt normal determines which is the best position. For example if the apparent figure of the sun is high above the surface should be with a slight angle. In "Solar engineering of thermal processes" from Duffie and Beckman there are somo examples.

I´m sorry Chris, but I had not read your previous comment. I just expressed what I know about the angle of incidence of the sun on a surface. Duffie & Beckman have graphically demonstrated this in his book Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes. I don´t wish to polemicize with you. OK, so we agree on that. We all try to help, but it's a waste of time for everybody when the same comments are repeated over and over. Next time, don't forget to read the whole thread before commenting. Regarding the original query, it does not seem that Geosol is a Matlab program...

Most of these have been already calculated. Some can be found in Sandia lab reports. you can also see the book on photovoltaics by C.S. Solanki, Published by PHI Learning. A dicussion on the optimum tilt angle is given in "Photovoltaic Systems - Analysis and Design" published by PHI learning, 2014.

Are we talking about a concentrating system or a simple flat plate collector?

The "tilt  equals latitude rule" mentioned above is only valid for concentrating systems that whose ouput solely depend on direct irradiance input. For flat plate collectors you will have to take diffuse irradiance into account as well, and the optimum fixed tilt is somewhere between half the latitude and the latitude. In this case you would need a year of hourly locally measured global irradiance and, in the ideal case,  measured diffuse or direct irradiance. If you don't have separate diffuse/direct measurement you will need a diffuse fraction model like the Skartveit &Olseth model to split global irradiance its' two components. After the splitting you will need a direct irradiance tilt-conversion model (just geometrics), and a diffuse irradiance tilt conversion model (like the Perez model or the Klucher model) + a ground albedo model. After the tiltconversion you add the three components and you have the tilted irradiance for one tilt angle. Repeat a few times for a range of tilt angles and Bob is your uncle.

I know that there was at least one EUPVSEC paper about PV-system simulation, the software will probably contain some code for the tilt conversion. I don't have the reference at hand, and I am not going to do your work for you, but it should not be that hard to find with Google Scholar.

I also recently read about some semi-open-source Matlab PV system simulation library, but I did not bookmark the website, so again you have to google it yourself.

A quick and dirty solution would be to take an existing solar energy simulation software (there are many commercial, free and open source programmes) and write an optimising script (shell script/ perl/ python/...) that calls the simulation program several times until a close enough approximation of the optimum tilt is found.

Added Note: I refound the EUPVSEC paper, it was a model for the PV module only, so no use for you.

I beg to differ with Jethro. The "tilt = latitude" thing is a very old rule-of-thumb for annual yield optimization with flat-plate collectors. It predates the invention of CPV.

Since it is only a rule-of-thumb, there are second-order variables to take into account.

The rule may be old, and probably not that bad for arid regions, but that does not mean it is generally applicable. But for cloudy climates,  with a large diffuse fraction in the irradiance,  it is no good. For example in the Netherlands and Northern-Germany about 60% of the annual horizontal irradiation is diffuse and the ideal tilt for a fixed flat plate collector is about 20° lower than the latitude. You cannot call this a second order effect anymore.

The rule was most probably based on data from the US, where it seems to work reasonably well. However, Jethro's interesting comments pushed me to look again into the detailed results I published in 2008 (http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Chris_Gueymard/publication/236314647_Fixed_or_tracking_solar_collectors_Helping_the_decision_process_with_the_Solar_Resource_Enhancement_Factor/file/9c960524c80f76d901.pdf).

The attached figure shows the ratio (noted SREF) of annual solar resource for various flat-plate collector geometries normalized with the corresponding "tilt = latitude" resource, as a function of clearness index Kt. When Kt decreases (cloudier climate), a lower tilt (e.g., tilt = latitude -15*) becomes slightly more advantageous, which gives credence to the results reported by Jethro. A decrease in tilt also means less self-shading, which is an important advantage.

Note, however, that the potential gain obtained by lowering the tilt is relatively small, less than 5%, because the "sweet spot" around the optimum tilt and azimuth is quite large, as demonstrated by Christensen & Barker (2001). Their paper is cited in my above-mentioned study. For BIPV, for instance, other considerations than the exact optimum tilt might become more important.

Additionally, for areas with cold snowy winters, things get more complex. A snow cover increases the reflected irradiance, thus favoring steeper tilts. Moreover, snow will not adhere as long on a steep tilt than on a flatter one. Both effects would make one recommend steeper tilts under such conditions, particularly if power production is important (and thus has high value) during winter.

Just to be fair. the results that I mentioned are not my results but mainly that of Vincent van Dijk, my former supervisor at  Utrecht University, department of Science, Technology and Society and of Ecofys a Dutch energy consultancy. As far as I know the results have only been published in the form of a cardboard disk that allows you to pick tilt angle and orientation to see the gain relative to the horizontal plane.

It would be good to see specific and precise results for Germany and northern Europe, so as to enable comparisons with the US or other climates...

Sounds like a nice little side-project. Maybe I can put a student on it.
