We would like to switch to electronic lab books, but all software that looks interesting is cloud based. We would like to avoid a cloud based version because we have concerns that it could compromise the security of our network and endanger sensitive patient data. Could you recommend a good software, which doesn't save data on a cloud?

Findings on the mac is simple and --- since you probably will be using other tools in conjunct -- is inclusive because you can add information summaries to track other docs. There is a protocol mechanism too.
Biggest question is why it would be needed if any patent is being sought. If you are trying to track to show reduction to practice or to show that you had an idea long ago so that when you get a patent and enter into a court battle over infringement you can hold on to the IP, forget it. The first to file system has removed those strategies --- just write the patent and get it in fast. For more pure science, and for project tracking, something like Findings will be simple.

You can install SciNote on your local server by yourself, the source code is available on GitHub. However, we recommend having an internal member or team responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and updates of the software if you choose to do it yourself.
