I would like to offer support to postgraduate students and content specialists who have English as an L2 and need to write academic papers in that language.
If the purpose is simply to help raise their awareness and knowledge of collocational strength, some corpora could make excellent tools to show what words co-occur with academic words. In particular I think COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) is an excellent resource because there is a collocation search tool and COCA has one of the largest databases.
You can also try http://www.just-the-word.com/ and http://www.ozdic.com/. They are the ones that I often benefit from when writing any piece of academic papers.
Flax (http://flax.nzdl.org/greenstone3/flax) might be what you are looking for. You can use it to search for collocations in a number of corpora, inluding a corpus of academic English. I hope that helps.
